Toyota introduced the first-generation MR2 in 1984, and the 1.6-liter 4A cars carry the AW11 code. It was engineered to take a 2-liter engine, but kept a light body of about 1,066 kg in US trim. Its suspension and handling were developed with help from Lotus. Ours is a 1987 AW11 MR2 with a five-speed manual, left completely stock and kept in good shape.
