Woodies grew out of the early practice of building a vehicle's passenger compartment from hardwood. They were often third-party conversions, some by large coachbuilding firms and some by local craftsmen. All-steel bodies later replaced wood for strength, cost, safety and durability. You're looking at a 1940 Plymouth Suburban woodie. Freeway capable, it has a three-speed column shift plus overdrive. It seats up to seven adults.
