Volkswagen built the Type 3 from 1961 to 1973, widening its range beyond the Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Type 2. The Variant wagon followed in February 1962 and was sold in the US as the Squareback. Its flat pancake engine sits under a panel in the rear cargo floor. In August 1963 VW added the twin-carburetor 1500 S, rated at 54 PS. Ours is a 1964 Variant Type S in light yellow over a cream interior.
