Porsche introduced the 911 in September 1964 as a two-door, rear-engine sports car, tracing its roots to sketches drawn in 1959. Porsche planned to retire the 356, leaving the six-cylinder 911 as its main car, and added the four-cylinder 912 as an entry-level model based on the 911.
