The Cannonball Run Story
The Cannonball Run Challenge is a speed record for driving across the United States. Covering a distance of about 2,906 miles (4,677 km), the run starts from the Red Ball Garage in New York City and ends at the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach
Also known as the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea-Memorial Trophy dash, the run was inspired from the 1981 The Cannonball Run film, which was based on an outlaw road race across the country.

Brock Yates pioneered the first run, setting the record at 60 hours in 1971. This initial record has popularized the run and made it an infamous record to attempt among the car community, with averaging speeds exceeding 100mph.

The Physics Behind the Calculation
The air resistance formula and work energy principle were used to create the formula used in this calculator. The final formula assumed the same vehicle was traveling at 70mph, which is the average freeway speed in California. It is important to note that this current formula does not that into account elevation changes during the route but stay tuned for an updated one!
